Speech state qualifiers

The SPHS Speech team earned runner-up honors at Friday’s Section 2A Tourney and had nine entries (11 students) advance to the State Speech Tournament on Saturday at Apple Valley. Fairmont edged St. Peter 130-122 for the team title.

The top 3 individual finishers in each of the 13 categories at the Section 2A meet advanced to state, and those Saints’ state qualifiers included the following:

• First place — Rafat Solaiman (Extemporaneous Speaking), Mara Johnson & Josiah Johnson (Duo).

• Second place — Lauren Mayer (Drama), Sophia Lee & Isaac Peterson (Duo); Josh Ellerbeck (Humorous); Maansi Bhakta (Prose); McKenzie McCann (Storytelling).

• Third place — Sammi Hofferbert (Great Speeches); Sumeya Ali (Poetry).

Other Saints placewinners included:

• Fourth place — Morgaine Miller (Extemporaneous Reading); Nora Leonard (Poetry)

• Fifth place — Mikinley Prafke (Creative Expression); Maddie Doose (Humorous); Vanessa Krueger (Original Oratory).

• Sixth place — Aubry Landsom (Great Speeches); Anders Taylor (Prose).

Team standings (top 5 of 22) — 1. Fairmont 130; 2. St. Peter 122; 3. Mankato Loyola 86; 4. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 37; 5 (tie). Maple River & Medford 33.
