In a two-day competition for the state championship, the New Prague Adapted Floor Hockey team came away with a consolation prize as it took fifth place at the State CI Adapted Floor Hockey Tournament held on March 16 and 17 at Bloomington Jefferson High School.
The Trojan team consists of players from New Prague, Tri-City United, Le Sueur-Henderson, Belle Plaine and Jordan schools and their coaches are Shellie Kriha, Jeremy Kalal and Steve Kriha.
The team is part of the CI Division program which is specifically intended for students with cognitive impairments who have medical clearance to compete in competitive athletics.
The Titans have one student on the team, Blake Perry, and the Giants share one student as well, Chris Pena.
Other players on the team include Eva Johnson, Garrett Gagner, Seth Dormer, Chase Smith, Evan Minar, Breanna Stark, Jack Schuman, Alexis Parks, Lydia Hayle and Dylan Raaen.
The first night of the state tournament, the Trojans suffered a disappointing loss to the Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs (11-6). The Mustangs took the game 10-7 and moved on to take fourth place in the tournament.
This loss put the Trojans in the consolation bracket, but the players weren’t going to give up that easily.
The Trojans won their next two games on March 17 against Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville (7-9) and Maple Grove (12-6).
New Prague/TCU/LSH/BP/Jordan defeated the Rams 10-7 which took them out of the tournament.
Finally, the Trojans finished off the tournament by defeating Maple Grove 11-2 to take the consolation championship.
The New Prague/TCU/LSH/BP/Jordan team finished its season with a 14-2-1 record and took second place in the Southern Conference. The team’s one regular season loss was against South Washington County who defeated the Trojans 19-5. The tie came from a game against Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville who tied them at 6-6.
“Overall we had a really good season and to end the season with the consolation championship at the state tournament we feel very fortunate,” head coach Shellie Kriha said.
St. Cloud Area (15-1) took the championship at the State CI Adapted Floor Hockey Tournament. South Washington County (15-1) took second place and North Suburban (14-2) finished in third.
